If you're looking to tag a big buck this season, then Coshocton County, Ohio just might be where you'll find him. Woodbury Wildlife Area in Coshocton County is the largest public hunting and fishing area in Ohio. Their nearly 20,000 acres is operated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources specifically for wildlife recreation. Other public hunting property in the area includes AEP's Conesville Coal Lands, Mohawk Dry Reservoir, Simco Wildlife Area and Woodbury Wildlife Area. Together Coshocton's wildlife areas offer over 50,000 acres of public hunting ground.  That's exactly why Coshocton, Ohio has become very well known to deer hunters throughout the United States. The Conesville Coal Lands is a 14,639 acre public hunting and fishing area located five miles Southeast of Coshocton, Ohio in Coshocton and Muskingum counties. The area provides over 100 lakes and ponds for fishing and an Equine Trail Area. No Camping - Recreational-User's permit required

Mohawk Dam is approximately 15 miles west of Coshocton, Ohio and 25 miles east of Mount Vernon, Ohio. Access to the dam is via State Route 36 (which connects Mount Vernon and Coshocton), then State Route 715 which travels directly across the crest of the dam. The Walhonding River is popular for canoeing and fishing. Simco Wildlife Area

Simco Wildlife Area lies in the southeastern corner of Coshocton County, approximately 3 miles south of the town of Coshocton. Access to the area may be gained from State Route 83 and Township Road 276, which runs east-west through the area. Over 97 percent of the land (837.4 acres) is forested. The remaining three percent (20.5 acres) is wetlands and ponds.

White-tailed deer, squirrels, rabbits, wild turkey, and ruffed grouse are the primary species of interest. Furbearers including beaver, raccoon, opossum, muskrat, mink, and skunks are present. The water impoundments have been stocked with bass, bluegill, and channel catfish.  Deer and turkey hunting may be productive throughout the area. Grouse and rabbit hunting may be productive in the brush land areas. Good squirrel hunting may be encountered on most of the area. Simco Wildlife Area also presents good opportunities for trapping furbearers.

Woodbury Wildlife Area in Coshocton County is the largest public hunting and fishing area in Ohio. Their 19,000 acres is operated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources specifically for wildlife recreation. It has also been designated as a 'Watchable Wildlife' area and is home to rarely spotted birds such as bobolinks, short-eared owls, rough-legged hawks and numerous songbirds. You'll also find white-tailed deer, squirrels, wild turkeys, cottontail rabbits, ruffed grouse, waterfowl, beaver, muskrat, raccoon, opossum, skunks and many others. More than 42 ponds on the land have been stocked with bass, bluegill, red-ear sunfish, and channel catfish. Open year-round, this public wildlife area is perfect for birding, hiking, picnicking, primitive camping, fishing and hunting. 

Woodbury features a Class A shooting range with 48 shooting benches distributed at 25, 50, 100 and 200-yard backdrops for pistol and rifle users. Shotgun enthusiasts can choose trap, skeet, hand-thrown or patterning areas. A walk-through archery trail with 20 targets set at various yardages is also available. Purchase permits for the shooting  range where you buy your hunting and fishing licenses.

Access to Woodbury Wildlife Area is free although licenses are required for hunting and fishing. There are numerous access roads into the area. The shooting range is located just seven minutes outside Coshocton on State Route 541. Call for directions and information (740) 824-3211.
