This special exhibit of American propaganda posters commemorates the 100th anniversary of the U.S.’s entry into WWI. The U.S. government decided to use an artistic popular medium, the poster, to incite fear in its citizens of an unknown enemy on another continent. Some of the illustrations have become the most iconic American images ever made, such as James Montgomery Falgg’s stern image of Uncle Sam pointing to the viewer above the words, “I Want You for U.S. Army.”

This ten minute journey begins at the market place in Bethlehem where the dreaded tax collector awaits, the Inn which is full for the evening leads to the stable (complete with animals) where Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus find rest. A host of heavenly angels alert the shepherds guarding their sheep with good news of Jesus’ birth, while the Wise Men (and their camels) worship the newborn Christ child. On a quiet farm in America’s heartland,an Italian war bride becomes an average Iowan housewife. That is, until a National Geographic photographer, who is seeking directions to the area’s historic covered bridges, knocks on her door. As she helps him find the location for the photo shoot, an unexpected, yet powerful, connection grows. And so begins the story, told through beautiful music, of a sweeping romance that makes us question the roads we travel, the doors we open and the bridges we dare to cross. The musical is based on the Robert James Waller’s 1992 best-selling novel, “The Bridges of Madison County”. The script was written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Marsha Norman with Music and Lyrics by Jason Robert Brown.
