Anishinabek educator and mycologist to explore traditional ecological knowledge at October 3 event in Coshocton
COSHOCTON, OH — Lost Skills Gathering, taking place October 3 at Clary Gardens, has announced Nathan Wright (Getege’nini) as this year’s keynote speaker.
Wright is an Anishinabek (Ojibwe) educator, mycologist, community herbalist, regenerative farmer, and water protector. He is a citizen of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and founder of Herbal Lodge, an Indigenous-owned botanical company based in northern Michigan.
Wright’s keynote, The Land Remembers: What Are We Missing When We Stop Listening?, draws on Indigenous teachings, traditional Anishinaabek stories, and a lifetime spent on the land to explore themes of connection, reciprocity, and responsibility. His presentation challenges audiences to become students of the natural world, rather than viewing it solely as a resource.
Wright’s teaching is shaped by decades of wild harvesting, tracking wildlife, foraging, and paddling remote waterways in the forests of northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. He has presented for the International Herb Symposium, Natural Products Expo West, Michigan State University, and Tuskegee University, and is a regular guest on TV6’s Discover U.P. His work has also been featured in Traverse Magazine and the documentary Troubled Water, reflecting his commitment to protecting the Great Lakes and Indigenous treaty rights.
Wright is also a contributing writer for New Hope Network, where he shares Indigenous perspectives with the natural products industry, exploring how values of reciprocity, observation, and relationship can help shape a more resilient and sustainable future.
Lost Skills Gathering brings together teachers and practitioners in Coshocton to explore the preservation, teaching, and practice of traditional skills, from herbalism and fiber arts to natural building and fermentation.
