Keeping it Coshocton: Decking Out My Dorm

By: Ashley Allen While going into my junior year of college at Muskingum University, there are some things from Coshocton I want to take back with me. I already have the majority of big, regular things bought and packed, but I enjoy having little trinkets or decorations that I can’t get just anywhere. As a 20-something-year-old, there are a few things I solely run off of and one of those is coffee! I have tried many flavors to see what I like but my favorite comes from a place called Baltic Coffee Co.. These coffee beans are roasted right in Coshocton County and are sold at various shops throughout the county (my favorite being Canal Cargo) and can be shipped! You can either purchase the beans whole or grinded–I prefer grinded so I can use them in my k-cups. Another must when living in smelly, crowded dorm buildings is having amazing wax melts! There are many candle makers throughout the county such as Heritage Candles (Rest Decor), Graceful Glow Candles (Canal Cargo), and Mill Creek Homestead (Coshocton Supply Co.). Just a heads up for those online shoppers though, some places don’t ship candles or wax melts (but that’s okay because everyone needs to visit Coshocton County anyways!). Just in Roscoe Village alone there is such a variety in decorations, essentials, and even that special something to tie my room together. One must-visit shop that I’ve mentioned earlier is Canal Cargo. They have bookbags, candles, coffee, lanyards and wallets, and even things such as body care or coasters. The store is absolutely beautiful and be sure to check out all three stories of it! I’m always in the market for new clothing, and Lynnie Lou’s is a new boutique that has opened in Roscoe Village that has athletic wear, casual/everyday outfits, and even some dressier office clothes. I have bought a dress to go to a cousin’s wedding, and I have my eye on the cutest jeans that I need to get before heading back to school. I personally am a fan of mismatched decorations that I’ll buy from a variety of places and it all just goes together. That being said – two can’t miss places in Historic Roscoe Village are Cottage Gate and the General Store. Both of these shops offer antique-y, unique objects that are sure to be perfect to store my things in, display snacks, and I even found a cute mirror to put on my wall! Of course, I’d never leave out Coshocton Supply Co. that has the comfiest, coziest shirts and the best mugs ever (especially if you have your eye out for a Bigfoot mug). Everything sold at this store benefits local artists and is made within Coshocton County! Moving beyond Roscoe Village, there are some other really cool shops within Coshocton to buy stuff for my dorm. Leaf & Linen was a perfect, short trip after work and I was able to pick up the cutest glass for my dorm to have a nice glass of water in the morning. They also have a great selection of plants and macrame crafts! If you’re looking for new skirts or dresses, this would make a great one-stop shop! I am by no means great at making crafts, but at Rust Decor they have workshops that show you how to make various decorations–from wreaths, to paintings, to macrame! That way you can have a really cool item to display, while also learning the skill of how to make it! Not to mention, they have most things premade! Go pick yourself up some cool pots for your plants or even a suncatcher for your car! While taking a stroll through Coshocton Square, I stopped by the Antique Mall and picked up a jar for my loose coffee and the most adorable textured dish that I will use as a candy jar! And since the day I stopped there happened to be a sidewalk sale in the Square, I was also able to score a cute pair of jeans at Bexley Ann’s at half off, and I picked up a crewneck sweater that I know I will live in at school. On my final days with my internship, I made sure to stock up on all things I would miss from Coshocton: candy from Roscoe Village Sweets and treats to fill my brand-new candy dish, an extra bag of Highlander Grogg coffee from Baltic Coffee Co., and since I’m going to miss my two pups while I’m away at school, I decided to stock them up on woofles and treats from Good Boy Bakery to enjoy while I’m away.
Keeping it Coshocton: Bigfoot Hunting

By: Ashley Allen Coshocton is home to Historic Roscoe Village, a functioning canal boat, numerous wineries and breweries, and even Bigfoot–apparently. While someone can take the easy way out and find Bigfoot via numerous signs and memorabilia sold in shops around town, there is a steady band of followers that meets in Coshocton every year to discuss all things Bigfoot and Sasquatch. There is a conference held annually in Coshocton, The Sasquatch Triangle Conference, that has big name guest speakers that travel all over the country looking for Bigfoot. Just in 2022, the conference was held at Lake Park and the featured speakers were Mike Miller and Mike Feltner who hosts The Ohio Night Stalkers, Steve Kulls, Eric Altman, and Todd Niess. The Conference ran from 9:30 AM- 5:30 PM and had a great turnout at Lake Park. It generated interest in hundreds of people! While they weren’t actively hunting Bigfoot that day, they had heard stories and were very well-educated in how to search for Bigfoot. There has not been a sighting for almost 20 years, that doesn’t deter people from looking! Here’s some helpful tips we’ve gathered to help you discover where the elusive creature has been hiding: One thing to keep in mind while Bigfoot hunting, Ohio is home to the “Ohio Grassman” which is a species that is similar to Bigfoot, but very aggressive! He has many reported sightings that date back to Native Americans and as recent as 2017. So, you might have an easier time finding the Grassman–but that doesn’t necessarily mean you want to. Remember, above all else, safety comes first! Enjoy your hunting excursions, but leave an ER trip off the itinerary if you are able to. There are plenty of places to spot (and buy) things with Bigfoot on them around Coshocton shops, so even if you are unable to see a living and breathing Bigfoot, you don’t have to go home empty-handed–just try a Bigfoot hunting shopping trip instead! Some shops that are a surefire way to find Bigfoot include Coshocton KOA Store, Roscoe General Store, and Coshocton Supply Co.! There are more places throughout the county, so happy hunting (and watch out for the Grassman)!

The gardens are closed to the public for the ceremony so everyone can enjoy privacy on the big day. Next up on planning the perfect Coshocton Wedding, is deciding what to wear! For the gentleman, there are two places available to rent tuxedos from; Nikko’s Limousine and Tuxedo Rental, and Carroll’s Men’s Shop. They offer suits and tuxedos in a range of different colors and styles, and work to accommodate the entire bridal party. Never fear though, because Coshocton’s different entertainment services can fulfill everyone’s needs! Mega Music DJ Services offers the party atmosphere and includes add-ons like light shows to their events. Another service provider is Mike Bechtol’s Music Service, who is a seasoned disk-jockey who specializes in Wedding receptions and adapts to whatever the wedding party wishes for on their big day. While they offer an array of colors, there is a sophisticated touch to each of their designs. We can’t forget about center-pieces, and what better way to do that than Linnets Flowers. Why Fly Annin Flags?

By: Ashley Allen Memorial Day, Flag Day, and the 4th of July are right around the corner, so make sure that you are displaying only the best, American-made flags for your homes, businesses, and events! Annin creates flags right in America. It is the oldest and largest flag maker in the United States, creating anywhere from historical flags to state flags, international flags to flags of special interest, and they even create custom flags. During this Memorial day if you see POW or MIA flags out and about, they were first created by the Annin company. They were first designed and created in 1979 in collaboration with the National League of Families of POW/MIA. Did you know that Annin flags were the first to be on the moon? The Apollo 11 mission resulted in Astronaut Neil Armstrong walking on the moon for the first time and proudly planting an American Flag–an Annin American Flag. Annin has been a part of many historical moments throughout American history. There were Annin flags present at President Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration, as well laid upon his casket when he passed. The flag planted at Iwo Jima by the U.S. Marines in 1945 also was an Annin flag! Not only is Annin one of the largest flag-making corporations in the world, but they are also a 6th generation family-owned company. They have three factories throughout America, including one in Coshocton, Ohio! Each factory focuses on different aspects of the flag-making process and Coshocton is preparation for patriotic events with hand-held flags, bunting, fans, among many other awesome products. Annin flags can only be picked up through a dealer. That means that you cannot go to the factory to purchase flags! Luckily, Coshocton Supply Co. is open daily 10am – 5pm and carries only Annin flags and can fill last minute needs before all of those flag-flying holidays!
Ready. Aim. Coshocton!

Coshocton County is in the Crosshairs of Ohio Hunting Hunters across the United States recognize Coshocton County, Ohio as the place for game. It’s often ranked as the top county in Ohio for deer kills and is consistently ranked in the top-three. But it’s really open season year-round for a variety of prey. Hunting animals is what put man atop the food chain. It was essential to his evolution. Meat-eating supercharged human brain activity by giving it the calories needed to advance. Man’s brain uses far more energy than any other muscle in the body. Once this incredible energy source was introduced to his diet, man surged ahead of all living creatures on Earth. Today, man still has an incentive to hunt that dates back over two million years – food. “In my family, we don’t kill it unless we are going to eat it,” said Scott Hosier, an avid hunter and fisherman.Read More
Collecting a Legacy… and Controversy

By Frank Rocco Satullo, The OhioTraveler – Your Tour Guide to Fun! Two brothers traveled the globe to amass an eclectic collection of artifacts – some creating controversy and others considered to be the best of their kind – only to donate it to their childhood town of Coshocton, Ohio. From the unusual Rothenstein Cache to the much debated Newark Holy Stones, the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum (JHM) attracts attention from professional archaeologists to busloads of travelers. These visitors are curious about the rare relics and infamous hoax that are one and all, human history. The two-story brick museum with its large pillars is nestled in the Historic Roscoe Village, a restored Ohio & Erie Canal town. JHM also has an important connection to the nearby Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, which have been nominated to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. This prestigious recognition would put these earthworks alongside the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Wall of China, and Stonehenge. Read More
